PATUAKHALI SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY (PSTU)
The Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) formally started functioning after promulgation of government gazette notification on 26 February 2002 with the campus of former Patuakhali Agricultural College as its nucleus. The PSTU took off its journey with the on-going Faculty of Agriculture offering 4-years B.Sc. Ag. Degree as its primary focus of academic program. The University has a mandate of widening its scope of educational expansion in conformity to the present education policy of the national government particularity in the information communication technology (ICT) and other demand-driven disciplines in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Against this backdrop the PSTU has planned to start two more new faculties, namely Computer Science and Engineering(CSE) as well as Business Administration and Management(BAM), the new frontiers of knowledge added to current academic program. In the meantime, it has already given affiliation to the Barisal Government Veterinary College as its constituent faculty. It has also plan to offer degree programs in the field of fisheries, food and nutrition and social sciences in the coming years.
The Patuakhali Science and Technology University has a long history before it comes to its present stage. It has been meta-morphically developed at the private initiative of the local people through the establishment of a Higher Secondary Institute in 1972 as a private college. It was then turned to Patuakhali Agricultural College under the affiliation of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh in1979 with the mandatory objectives of producing agricultural graduates offering B.Sc.Ag. degree. Later, the college was nationalized on 1 February 1985 and was placed under the administrative control of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Ministry of Agricultural together with BAU affiliation.
The Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh launched a project of establishing ‘Science and Technology University’ in the former greater districts where no such universities exist. That project advocate the transformation of Patuakhali Agricultural College into a full-fledged university entitled Patuakhali Science and Technology University that came into being through a Parliamentary Act passed on 12 July 2001.
Academic
Here are five faculties and two academic buildings. The departments and institutes of the University are responsible for the academic activities which include teaching, research and industrial consultancy.
The University has introduced the course system for undergraduate studies from the academic session Normal 2002-2003, commencing from 26 February 2002 . Under this system there are two terms in an academic year. Each term provides for a minimum of fourteen instructional weeks. The medium of instruction is English. Students are evaluated on a continuous basis throughout the term.
Postgraduate studies and research are now among the primary functions of the University. Most of the departments and institutes have Masters and PhD programs. Currently, each academic year is divided into two semesters: January Semester and June Semester. For theory courses the number of class-weeks in a semester is fourteen. Research work is evaluated on the basis of the review of thesis/project by peer examiners both from within the University and outside the University.
The teachers of the departments and institutes meet periodically to review the courses and their contents; necessary changes are made to meet the needs and trends from time to time. Course syllabi and ordinances in respect of the academic program of study are prepared by the Academic Council, the highest academic body within the University.
